How We Chose to Act on the Problem
Part of our research project was to perform an action that corresponds with our research. Instead of doing one big action, we chose to do a few little actions. We conducted a survey on NIU's campus to find out what students in our community thought of female and male athletes. We also attended one of NIU's women's rugby games to support a women's athletic event in our community. Finally we created a Facebook page for our group and reached our goal of getting 100 likes by the end of the Fall 2013 semester. Here are some of the pictures from the Rugby game, our results from the survey, and a link to the Facebook page is below the photo gallery or can be found at the top of the site in the right hand corner.
Our actions connect to our topic that sexism is a problem because we used our action to find more research statistics for our overall learning experience. The significance of our action was to provide more support for female athletes in our community

(Attended 10/19/2013) Student Survey: Sexism in Athletics
|
The purpose of our survey was not only to find out what our peers thought but also to see if our community proved that women in athletics are given less support than men in high school or college athletics.
We surveyed a sample of 50 random students to represent the entire population of NIU's campus. Blank Survey
To view a larger version of the blank copy of our survey click on the box below to see what kinds of questions we asked our peers. As you can see, two of the questions on our survey asked students what they thought were the characteristics of a female athlete versus a male athlete. Here some examples that were most common and that we found to be interesting.
Characteristics of Male Athletes: Competitive, strong, in shape, tall, determined, muscular, fast, built, only black or white in race, masculine, smart, powerful, and aggressive. Characteristics of Female Athletes: Physically strong, in shape, tall, lean, determined, competitive, skinny, tomboyish, only black or white in race, sexy, emotional, flexible, and bold. |
